This DIY skateboard has been a fan favorite! You can just paint the decks for a fun and unique work of art, or you can build a complete one of a kind skateboard. Either way, this craft is definitely a crowd pleaser. Below are the links to all the materials we used.

How We Came Up With the Idea

For my daughter’s birthday, we threw a skate themed party and it was so much fun! We had originally talked about having her party at the local skating rink, but unfortunately it shut down. So I got thinking, what if we still did a skate party, but just move it to a park? We told her friends to bring their skates, bikes, scooters, and skateboards and it was a hit!

I love planning crafts for kids and I especially love thinking of super memorable crafts that won’t just end up in the trash the next week. So when I thought of painting your own skateboard as a party craft, I was so excited! I found some affordable kid-sized skateboard decks and some paint markers for mess-free painting, laid out a canvas on the grass, and the kids had so much fun painting them.

Now I know some of you might be thinking, “Just the deck? What is a kid suppose to do with just a skateboard deck?” Hear me out. It was just a fun party craft, the whole first grade class and their siblings were invited, and although I would have loved to provide all the materials for a full skateboard build, we just didn’t have that kind of budget. But trust me, the kids had a blast!

After the party, I did want my kids to be able to build a complete skateboard. So I ordered some clear grip tape, trucks, and wheels. I was planning on being the one to help them, but when my husband heard I got grip tape he said, “You know, I’ve been known to grip a few boards.” The little skater kid inside him was pretty excited to help his girls with this one. Now to be honest, this is definitely just a kids skateboard. It’s great for scooting around and typical little kid skate play, but if you’re wanting something for more serious skating, I’d recommend purchasing a regular sized deck.

Not only did the kids at the party have fun with this one, but I’ve also done this craft at markets and it’s a head-turner for sure. People see the blank decks and they can’t help but stop. It’s definitely not a basic craft, and it’s something your kid can use for years. Hope you give this one a try!
